Social media image sizes for 2026
If you only remember one number, make it 1080 × 1350 px — 4:5 portrait. It is now Instagram's recommended feed size, it cross-posts cleanly to Facebook, Threads and LinkedIn, and it takes up more phone screen than square or landscape.

The big change this year
Instagram changed its profile grid from square to a taller portrait format in January 2026, and Meta now prioritises 4:5 portrait feed posts over the legacy 1:1 square. Square images still post and still display, but they get cropped on the new portrait grid and they occupy noticeably less screen on a phone.
If you have a library of square social assets, this is the year to re-cut them. Portrait is the default now.

Think in ratios, not pixels
Platforms change their recommended pixel dimensions constantly, often without announcing it. Aspect ratios move far more slowly. If you design and crop to the ratio, a spec change costs you a re-export rather than a redesign.
There are really only four ratios worth internalising:
- 4:5 portrait — feed posts almost everywhere
- 9:16 vertical — Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts
- 1.91:1 landscape — link previews and Open Graph images
- 1:1 square — profile pictures, and feeds that haven't moved to portrait
Safe zones
Full-screen formats overlay platform UI on top of your image. For Stories and Reels at 1080 × 1920, keep text and logos inside roughly the central 1080 × 1420 — the top ~250 px and bottom ~250 px get covered by profile chrome, captions and buttons.
For link previews at 1.91:1, remember the crop varies by platform and by whether the viewer is on mobile or desktop. Keep anything essential in the middle 60% of the canvas.
Resizing a batch for several platforms
One source image, several outputs, is the normal workflow. In ShrinkFox:
- Drop your images in and open the crop screen.
- Set the aspect ratio pill to 4:5 and position the crop box on the subject.
- Tick Apply this crop to all images if the framing is similar across the set, then click Done.
- Pick the Instagram portrait (1080 × 1350) preset with Fill and crop so every output is exactly that size.
- Process and download.
- Click Continue editing and repeat with a 9:16 crop and the Stories size for the same source images.
Format and file size
Every platform re-compresses what you upload, which means uploading a heavily compressed file gets you compression applied twice and visible artefacts. Upload JPEG at quality 85–90, or PNG for graphics with flat colour and text.
Don't upload WebP or AVIF to social platforms. Support is inconsistent and you gain nothing — they're going to transcode it anyway. Those formats are for your own website, where you control delivery.
